Building Your Network, Part 2

Network Layout
- In the following simple diagram, WS1 stands for Workstation, etc. The diagram shows how each
computer is connected directly to the hub.
- Before actually connecting the computers give some thought as the best way to run the cables
from the hub. This is particularly true if the hub is on a different floor from the computer.
Twisted-pair cable is relative fragile, and can be easily damaged by twists or kinks. Keep
this in mind as you plan the cable route and lay the cable.
- To connect your network simply connect one LAN adapter in each computer to one of the ports in
the hub using one of the cables. (Note: your hub may have port labelled UpLink, or something
similar. Leave that port empty as it is reserved for a different purpose.)
- Note that the Gateway computer requires two LAN adapters as it is connected, not only to
the LAN, but to the modem, whether DSL, ISDN, or, as in our case, Cable.

Next week we'll look at what's required to connect the Gateway, and thereby the LAN, to the outside world of
the Internet. Be sure to check back then.
