- Because of the number of software packages that depend on certain fixpaks and other system
updates being installed, I prefer to keep my system reasonably up-to-date with regard
to fixpaks, and I recommend you consider doing the same. If you wish, however, you may skip
the following section. Please note, however, that some of these updates include
significant updates to the networking software--including some additional features.
- I also prefer to do the mass updates required after a fresh install from the latest
Warp-Up!
CD, published by Indelible Blue. Well-known as
well as more obscure, but still important, updates are all conveniently located on one inexpensive
CD, along with simplified installation procedures. If you prefer to download your own, then you
can get most of the same updates, fixpaks, etc., from the Duane's World web site.

Here are the most important ones to apply:
- ESS Sound Card Driver Updates, if applicable
- OS/2 Warp FixPak
- Netscape Communicator
- Feature Install
- Java Runtime + any other modules you wish.
- MPTS 5.12 (16-bit) (The version released with Warp 4 is 5.10)
- The prevailing wisdom is that the 16-bit version requires much less memory, and the only
time the 32-bit version would be advantageous would be in a heavy-use environment such
as on a server.
- MPTS 5.12 (16-bit) Fixpak
- Netscape Communicator for OS/2 Plug-in Pak 3.0
- TCP/IP 4.0 Application Updates
- TCP/IP for virtual DOS/Windows updates
- Warp 4 Peer Fixpak
- InfoZip Utilities
- Any other utilities and updates (such as Daniella's or the Gradd drivers) that you may find
useful.
- This is a good place to install a your usual video driver and/or switch to high-resolution
from the standard VGA if you wish.
- Restore your Desktop using whatever means you prefer. For me this means installing
ObjectDesktop and then using
ObjectPackage to restore the Package I saved before I started this. However, several other
products are available for performing this task. They include:
- UniMaint
- DeskMan/2
- Desktop Backup for OS/2
As you may already know, a new version of Smartsuite for Warp 4 was recently released by Lotus. Since
this is such an important product I feel it should be reviewed as soon as possible. In order to
accomplish this without derailing the current series, for the next few weeks we'll alternate between
reviews of modules in the SmartSuite package and articles in the present series. I've asked a guest
writer, John Edwards, whom many of you have met before in a
previous article, to
assist with the reviews so that we can get the task accomplished more quickly.

Next week: First look at Lotus SmartSuite 1.5 - WordPro
